Don't Trust the B in District 23

One year after she resigned as Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is back in the news; well, depending on who you watch. While she no longer runs the Democratic National Committee, she still represents Florida’s 23rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Wasserman Schultz received the wrath of Bernie Sanders supporters when leaked DNC e-mails showed that she had done everything in her power to derail Sanders’ insurgent candidacy and ensure that Hillary Clinton would win the Democratic nomination for President.  I guess you could say she gave Sanders the back of her hand. It should come as no surprise that Sanders endorsed her primary challenger Tim Canova in last year’s election.  Canova has already announced that he plans to challenge Wasserman Schultz again next year.  Tom Perez, President Obama’s profane former Labor Secretary, has replaced Wasserman Schultz as DNC chair.

The spotlight shines on Wasserman Schultz yet again as the FBI recently found smashed hard drives at the home of Imran Awan, an IT staffer who worked for Wasserman Schultz and other Congressional Democrats. The FBI had been investigating Awan for bank fraud.  The Bureau has been collaborating with Capitol Police on an investigation into “serious, potentially illegal violations on the House IT Network”, including accessing congressional computers without permission.  Authorities arrested Awan at Virginia’s Dulles Airport on Monday as he was attempting to flee the country.   His wife and children suddenly fled the country earlier this year with a large amount of cash in tow.  In the wake of these allegations, liberals have claimed that Awan is being unfairly targeted because of his Pakistani ethnicity.  Channeling his inner Hillary Clinton, Chris Gowen, Aman’s attorney, has stated that the charges against his client present another example of “anti-Muslim bigotry” cooked up by the “ultra right wing pizzagate media.”   Good God, liberals are so predictable.  Unfortunately for Gowen, the complaint and affidavit outlining the case for Awan’s arrest makes no mention of his Muslim faith.  There goes the bigotry theory.  Gowen still dismissed the accusations against Awan as “utterly unsupported, outlandish and slanderous.”

Following his arrest, Wasserman Schultz finally fired Awan earlier this week.  Awan’s wife, brothers, sisters-in-law and friends also worked as IT staffers for other House Democrats; making more than $4 million in the past seven years alone.  All of them were barred from using computer networks at the House of Representatives earlier this year. Wasserman Schultz had known that Awan was under investigation when the investigation first became public in February; yet she kept him on her staff anyway, assigning him the new title of “advisor”.  Most other Democratic representatives had cut Awan and his family members and friends loose upon hearing that they were subjects in a criminal investigation.

As part of the investigation, Capitol Police seized a laptop used by Awan from the Rayburn Office Building.  Wasserman Schultz, whose office is located in the Longworth Office Building, claimed that this laptop belonged to her and asserted that “The Capitol Police is not able to confiscate members’ equipment when the Member is not under investigation.”   Wasserman Schultz, who serves on the House Committee that oversees the budget for the Capitol Police, threatened that there would be “consequences” if they did not return the laptop.  Since it appears as if Wasserman Schultz attempted to use her authority to interfere with a criminal investigation, I wonder if Al Green would consider this an example of obstruction of justice. Wasserman Schultz has engaged in this type of threatening behavior before, dispatching the DNC Communications Director to demand an apology from MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski after the “Morning Joe” co-host asked her to step down as DNC chair following the leak of DNC e-mails showing Wasserman Schultz speaking unfavorably of Bernie Sanders and his campaign staff.  Some might want to call Wasserman Schultz a “nasty woman” but she would probably take that as a compliment.

Knowing how much the media loves a good juicy scandal, you would think this story would merit a good amount of coverage.  However, that theory proves incorrect as the three major news networks, major national newspapers and the two left-leaning cable news networks barely gave the story any airtime at all. CBS This Morning was kind enough to devote a whopping 37 seconds to the story on Wednesday.  This lack of coverage should prove beyond a reasonable doubt the media’s emotional investment in protecting the image of the Democratic Party.  If this scandal involved a Republican, the media would probably provide wall-to-wall coverage.

If this story does not highlight the corruption and incompetency running amok in the Washington Sewer, then I don’t know what does.  These IT staffers earned three times the amount of money that many of their counterparts earn for performing the same services.  Awan may have accumulated a massive amount of wealth by double billing members of Congress for his services.  There are rumors that Imran Awan may have helped Debbie Wasserman Schultz in her efforts to undermine Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid.  When you take into account Wasserman Schultz’s shady behavior in the past, it would certainly not come as a surprise if this rumor was true.  The possibility exists that Wasserman Schultz had no idea her IT guy was up to no good.  However, it wouldn’t hurt to ask a few more questions.

In the time between now and his preliminary hearing on August 21, Awan must wear a GPS monitor and abide by a curfew of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.  Also, he cannot travel more than 50 miles from his house in Virginia and his passports have been revoked. I guess it’s safe to say the party’s over.  The Daily Caller News Foundation, unlike the mainstream media, has covered this story extensively.  Check out their website for more than 20 detailed articles pertaining to this severely under-reported topic.  Just because the fake news won’t report a story, does not mean that it does not exist.
