Election 2020: Polls Don't Mean Everything

The media have obsessed about a new Morning Consult poll that found President Trump at the lowest net approval rating of his presidency.   Following the release of the Mueller report, the weekly tracking poll pegged President Trump’s net approval of -18 percent; even lower than his previous low points, which followed his Charlottesville comments and the partial government shutdown.   The Morning Consult poll found that 39 percent of voters approve of President Trump’s performance while 57 percent disapprove.   Let’s take a look at the polls of a roughly comparable time in American history.   In February 1991, Gallup pegged President George H.W. Bush’s approval rating at 89 percent.   Had a presidential election occurred that month, Bush likely would have destroyed his Democratic rival in the biggest electoral landslide in American history.   The low point of George H.W. Bush’s presidency, in terms of approval rating, came much closer to the actual P...

How the Left Stole Christmas

For years, the left has attempted to portray Republicans and conservatives as puritans; comparing them to the pastor in “Footloose” who wanted to ban dancing.  They would argue that conservatives simply wanted to stand in the way of people living their lives, fearing that “someone, somewhere is having fun.” In the era of Trump, it seems like liberals have adopted the puritan tactics that they spent years of haranguing conservatives for embracing. Last year, I outlined how liberals’ obsession with political correctness has led them to declare war on Halloween and Christmas; specifically discussing their outrage over the President of the University of Louisville and some of his staff dressing up in Mexican attire and the decision of a school district in Massachusetts to cancel a Halloween parade.  I also mentioned how President emerged as an antidote in the war on Christmas, promising that “We’re going to start saying Merry Christmas again.”  I wondered whether or not Pre...

Apology Tours: 2018 Edition

During his first year in office, President Obama embarked on a global apology tour.   The Heritage Foundation put together a list of ten examples of him apologizing in just his first four and a half months in office alone; compiled just before he began a trip to Saudi Arabia , Egypt , Germany , and France . During a speech in liberals’ favorite country, France , he complained about America ’s “failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world” and highlighting his plans to close the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay , Cuba ; which ultimately never came to fruition.   The President also apologized for America ’s “arrogance,” one of many times he would reject the idea of American exceptionalism.   As far as Europe’s leading role in the world, Europe has led the globe in implementing the disastrous principles of open borders, political correctness, third-wave feminism and socialism that have only hastened the phenomenon identified by Pat Buchanan as “Th...

The Politicization of Everything

Earlier this month, Miss America announced that it would no longer hold swimsuit competitions or evening gown beginning with this year’s competition; which will take place on September 9 in Atlantic City .   Instead, the contestants will walk on stage in clothing that “makes them feel confident, expresses their personal style, and shows how they hope to advance the role of Miss America .”   The plan to scrub the swimsuit competition would obviously fail if all of the women agreed that bikinis “make them feel confident.” The contestants will participate in a back-and-forth with the judges focusing on highlighting “her achievements and goals in life and how she will use her talents, passion, and ambition to perform the role of Miss America .”   If people wanted to watch a Talent show, they would tune into “ America ’s Got Talent” or the “X-Factor.”   The free market will ultimately decide the fate of Miss America .   Those who hope to see beautiful wome...

Memorial Day: A Perfect Time for an Update on the Culture War

Over the past nearly one quarter of a millennium, millions of brave men and women have died serving their country in an effort to preserve freedom at home and abroad.   In order to encourage the American public to reflect on the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces, the Federal government has set aside the last Monday in May as “Memorial Day” since 1971, when the “Uniform Monday Holiday Act” first took effect.   For the previous century, Americans celebrated Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day” on May 30.   In its earliest days, Americans would celebrate Memorial Day by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers.   For years, the American public held a consensus that the American flag and military personnel deserved an enormous amount of respect.   Americans of all political persuasions and backgrounds could unite around the American flag as a symbol of national unity and pride.   A half a century after the culture war first bega...

Top 10 Lowlights of 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, now seems like a good time to acknowledge the lowlights that this year could have done without.     Dianne Feinstein’s Religious Bigotry : While questioning Amy Barrett, President Trump’s nominee to serve on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, Senator Dianne Feinstein seemed to suggest that her Catholic faith disqualified her from serving on the bench.   Feinstein complained that “When we read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you.   And that’s of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for – for years in this country.”   I find Feinstein’s behavior quite strange considering the fact that the Democrats always whine about “religious tests” when it comes to our immigration policy.     They don’t seem to mind “religious tests” when it comes to judges.   The United States Senate confirmed Barrett 55-43 at the end of October.   Not...
