Political Calendar 2017

While the fake news media is obsessing over stories such as how many scoops of ice cream Pres. Trump has with his dessert, there is a lot going on in United States politics this year despite the fact that the next Presidential Election is more than three years away.  There are two gubernatorial elections, quite a few special U.S. house elections, a special U.S. senate election, and several local races.

Another Map Bites the Dust

Well, that didn’t take long.   Just one week after a panel of judges struck down the map of Michigan’s Congressional districts, another panel of judges struck down the map of Ohio’s Congressional districts.   Both of these exercises in judicial activism could have significant impact on next year’s House elections. Republicans need a net gain of 18 seats to retake the House of Representatives.   Their path to a House majority requires flipping at least two-thirds of the 31 districts with Democratic representatives that President Trump won in 2016.   The aforementioned decisions by the judicial branch will likely make Republicans’ job harder, not easier.   Only one silver lining may come out of all of this mid-decade redistricting lawsuits.   Republicans may end up netting one seat in Maryland.   The Supreme Court will decide on the Constitutionality of maps in Maryland and North Carolina and their decision will have big implications for the lega...

When Jimmy Carter Becomes the Democrats' Voice of Reason

Of all of the five living former Presidents, President Trump has surprisingly found his most loyal ally in Former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat.   In a recent interview with The New York Times , President Carter admitted that the media has not treated any previous President as unfairly as they have treated President Trump.   In that same interview, he said that he doubted that Russia had any significant impact on the results of the 2016 Presidential Election.   Making such a statement amounts to heresy in today’s Democratic Party, as would his stance on abortion .          President Carter’s election came in the middle of an “Era of Bad Feelings”.   At the time of America ’s bicentennial, The Watergate scandal that prematurely ended the Nixon Presidency had destroyed the faith of many Americans in our political system.   They looked to the little-known Georgia Governor as a breath of fresh air.   While they did not ...
