Corporate America and the Culture War

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all! I already celebrated  Thanksgiving this past weekend; meaning that by the time tomorrow rolls around, I will find myself lucky if any leftovers at all remain in the fridge.   With Thanksgiving in the rear-view mirror, the Christmas season has officially begun.   In addition to colder temperatures, decorations, Christmas music, and lots of lots of shopping, another tradition associated with the holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ will begin to appear in supermarkets and malls across the country: the Salvation Army Red Kettle.   For more than a century and a half, the England-based Salvation Army has worked to meet the “physical and spiritual needs” of the less fortunate. The charity organization has several pages on its website urging visitors to donate, giving it the ability to “help disaster survivors,” “provide shelter,” “cure hunger,” “overcome poverty,” “combat addiction,” “share God’s love,” “assist the une...

President Trump Votes With His Feet

To those who have not figured it out yet, liberals want to massively expand the size and scope of the federal government.   This goes against the vision of the Founders who did not want a massive, centralized federal government.   In Federalist No. 45 , future President James Madison declared that “the powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite.” This federalist system has given Americans the option to leave states that no longer meet their needs while remaining a member of the American family.   Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis once described the states as “laboratories of democracy.” Unfortunately, the leaders of many states do not seem to have the ability to recognize it when their experiments have failed miserably.   That especially goes for the head honchos in deep blue states.  Fortunately for the residents of blue states...

The Left's Latest Idea: Defund Traditional Churches

Before weighing in on the LGBTQ Equality Town Hall that took place on CNN last week that represented a new low for the mainstream media, I thought it might make sense to look back at some of the predictions people made prior to 2015; when the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states.   Back in 2013, my high school newspaper asked representatives of the left and the right to weigh in on the question “should the government regulate same-sex marriage?” The person writing on behalf of the right, who attends the same church as me, warned that “if same-sex marriage becomes regulated by the government, it’s possible that many places of worship will be closed because they will not offer same-sex marriages.   Not only that, but businesses run by people who abide by these religious dogmas may be penalized as well. For instance, if a private business were to deny a homosexual couple a service (like wedding photography) if the own...

Updates in the 'Battle For the Soul of America'

A lot of stories caught my attention over the past month proving that Joe Biden had a point when he talked about a “battle for the soul of America.” Leaving aside the fact that Biden often finds himself on the wrong side of the issues at the heart of the “battle for the soul of America,” these stories provide necessary insight into the progress made by both sides in the culture war that continues to divide America. For starters, 18-year-old Brandt Jean provides quite a bit of hope for the future of America; in contrast to the media’s favorite members of Generation Z including climate activist Greta Thunberg and gun control advocate David Hogg.   Last year, off-duty Dallas police officer Amber Guyger shot and killed Jean’s brother, Botham, after mistaking him for a burglar when walking into his apartment; which she mistook for her own. Last week, a jury found Guyger guilty of murder and she now faces a prison sentence of ten years. While nearly everyone else in America wou...

Religious Americans' Wedding Bell Blues

Image
I find myself unable to comment on the politics of the week in my typical Saturday blog post because of my presence at my cousin’s wedding.   Going to another wedding makes me sad that I do not get to play the part of groom and glad that I do not have anything to do with the wedding business.   In recent years, the PC police have worked hard to give a series of God-fearing Americans the “Wedding Bell Blues.”   For these Americans, the source of the heartburn does not match up with the “Wedding Bell Blues” experienced by Marilyn McCoo and many millennial females stuck in the status of “partner” just waiting for their significant others to put a ring on it. Instead, these Americans have the case of the “Wedding Bell Blues” because of coercion from the left (and the judicial branch) to participate in events that violate their deeply held religious beliefs. Colorado baker Jack Phillips operates Masterpiece Cakeshop in a suburb of Denver. He found himself in legal hot water...
