The United States of America: 241 Years Young

Yesterday marked the 241st Anniversary of the signing of our Declaration of Independence. Obviously, a lot has changed since then.  The area of our nation has increased exponentially from around 360,000 square miles to around 3.8 million square miles while the population has exploded from around 2.5 million in 1776 to more than 300 million today.  The signers of the Declaration of Independence knew they were taking a huge risk by severing ties with Britain, then one of the world’s most powerful nations. That risk definitely paid off as the United States of America defied all odds and quickly became one of the world’s biggest superpowers.

A country of America’s magnitude is obviously going to face a large amount of challenges, both domestically and overseas.  In the past, we have been remarkably successful at overcoming challenges; including a Civil War, two World Wars, and the Great Depression.  There have always been, and still are, plenty of people around the world who are jealous and/or embarrassed by America’s success and want to do everything in their power to take us down.  In the past, the Soviet Union presented the greatest threat to our national security and liberty.  As of right now, our biggest enemy on the world stage is Radical Islamic terrorism; especially the terrorist group known as ISIS. This group of savages will not rest until it meets its goal of the establishment of a worldwide Islamic caliphate.

Sadly, there are many people within our borders who fail to recognize the nobility of our great nation.  What’s even sadder is that many of these people are professors at American universities who hope to pass down their Anti-American worldviews to the next generation. To these people, there is no need to Make America Great Again because America was never great in the first place.  Examples of Anti-American professors include Bill Ayers, formerly a member of the group Weather Underground, who just recently retired from his teaching position at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  His wife Bernardine Dohrn, also a Weather Underground alumnus, taught at Northwestern University for over twenty years.  Weather Underground was a group of far-left militants, active during the Vietnam War Era, who declared war against the United States Government and orchestrated bombings at the US Capitol Building and the Pentagon in retaliation for the US Government’s military actions overseas.  Kathy Boudin, another former member of Weather Underground who spent over two decades behind bars for her involvement in the 1981 Brinks Armored Car Robbery, now teaches at Columbia University.  The Brinks robbery was carried out by members of the Black Liberation Army and the May 19th Communist Organization, an offshoot of Weather Underground.  This robbery resulted in the death of a Brinks guard as well as two police officers. Ward Churchill, a former professor at the University of Colorado, once referred to the victims of 9/11 as “Little Eichmanns.”  Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D’Souza interviewed Churchill for his book and film “America: Imagine the World Without Her.”  When asked by D’Souza who he thought the new Evil Empire was, Churchill replied “You’re sitting in it.”   There are many other people in our country who want to sacrifice everything that is connected to our uniquely American identity in order to become a global citizen.  These are the folks who want to turn over our national sovereignty to the bureaucrats in Brussels, basically undoing everything that we fought for in the Declaration of Independence.

America has always prided itself as a pluralistic society; with many interest groups competing for recognition in the marketplace of ideas.  Interest groups can be a very good thing, when they exist for the right reasons.  But lately, there are many people who pledge allegiance to the flag of their individual interest group rather than the American flag that we all share in common.  This phenomenon is often referred to as identity politics.  Identity politics has led to a very profitable grievance industry, where various minority groups seek to use “victimhood” to avoid personal responsibility and get special privileges from the government.  No one should act surprised when the inevitable result of a deeply divided country comes to fruition.  Black Lives Matter activist Blair Imani was asked in an interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson “Aren’t we all first and foremost Americans?”  She responded by saying “I’m black first.” Sadly, she is not the only person who thinks like this.  A group of black students at UC Santa Cruz demanded a four-year housing guarantee in a building painted the colors of the Pan-African flag.  It is quite sad that these students would want to segregate themselves after all of the blood shed by earlier generations to ensure racial integration.

I’d like to conclude by saying “Happy belated birthday, America.”  You are truly one of a kind.  Everyone who lives here is truly fortunate to call this great nation home.  We cannot maintain our greatness as a nation if this epidemic of self-loathing promoted by the likes of Bill Ayers and Ward Churchill continues to take hold in our culture.  There will always be passionate differences of opinion among the American populace but it is important to remember a quote frequently spoken by President Trump at his rallies, “Whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots.”
