Thank God for the American Revolution
Two years ago, The United Kingdom held a referendum on
whether or not the island nation should remain in the European Union. Countries with vastly different cultures and
languages banded together to form The European Union in the years following
World War II, hoping to avoid the development of new nationalist movements on
the line of those that caused World War II.
Eventually, many of the countries began abandoning their own forms of
currency in favor of a common currency known as the Euro. The EU allows citizens of one of its
countries to move freely between member states.
In the past half a century, the EU has amassed an unfathomable amount of
power, as the bureaucrats in its Brussels
headquarters seek
to take control of every aspect of everyday life in the 28-nation
bloc.
The left, including President Obama, and many on the
right, including Prime Minister David Cameron, urged voters to vote to remain
in the European Union, along with the Scottish Independence Party. Strong advocates for voting “leave” included
Nigel Farage, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party, and London Mayor
Boris Johnson.
The referendum, nicknamed “Brexit” by those supporting
Britain ’s
withdrawal from the European Union, took place four and a half months before
the 2016 Presidential Election. With 100
percent of precincts reporting, 52 percent of United Kingdom residents voted to
leave while 48 percent voted to remain. Younger
voters, London , Northern
Ireland , and Scotland
furnished most of the “remain” vote while much of the “leave” vote came from
“the midlands,” an area of Britain
home to many industrial powerhouses that have found themselves abandoned in the
post-industrial society created by globalization. As President Trump would say, many forgotten
men and women reside in “the midlands,” the British equivalent of the United States ’
“rust belt.” The map below illustrates
the results of “Brexit” by region:
As the June 23 referendum did not turn out the way he
would have hoped, Prime Minister Cameron announced his intention to
resign. The Conservative Party rejected
“Brexit” enthusiasts such as Farage and Johnson, instead selecting Home
Secretary Theresa May, who also opposed “Brexit,” as his replacement.
Globalists suffered another setback when the United States of America
elected Donald Trump as the 45th President. President Trump campaigned on “Making America
Great Again” by cracking down on illegal immigration, banning migration from
terror-prone countries, protecting the Second Amendment, and smashing political
correctness. It looks like voters on
both sides of the Atlantic had rejected the
cosmopolitan values of multiculturalism, open borders and banning “hate speech”
in favor of restoring the traditional western values of free speech and
individual liberty.
For all those who complain, often rightly so, about
how the folks in Washington
remain tone deaf to the demands of voters following the 2016 Presidential
Election, “Brexit” voters have experienced a much greater degree of disappointment.
Prime Minister May called for a general election in order to build a stronger majority in Parliament heading into the “Brexit” negotiations. The idea blew up in her face, the Conservative Party ended up losing 13 seats. For the record,
In recent years, the left in western countries has become openly hostile to Christianity. Those looking for an example of this need look no further than an article published by Vice in 2015 asking “Was Jesus Gay?” The brilliant, beautiful, and talented Lauren Southern decided to perform a social experiment to see what would happen if a similar statement was made about Allah. Southern and some of her friends created some fake posters reading “Allah is Gay, Allah is Trans, Allah is Lesbian, Allah is Intersex, Allah is Feminist, Allah is Queer, Allah is all of us.” Posing as social justice warriors, Southern and friends distributed the posters in the English town of
A spokesman for Home Secretary Amber Heard justified
the ban, saying that her presence in the United Kingdom was not “conducive
to the public good.” Did the geniuses in
the United Kingdom
forget about the three terror attacks that took place last year? Wouldn’t the people who took all of those
innocent lives pose a “threat to the fundamental interests of society and to
the public policy of the United
Kingdom ?”
But as the religion of Islam becomes more of a potent political force in
the United Kingdom ,
the people in power have wrapped their arms around the religion of “diversity”
and “multiculturalism.” This religion
forbids any criticism or politically incorrect statements about Islam, which
the left treats as a race rather than a religion. The UK has also banned Pamela Geller
and Michael Savage, both harsh critics of radical Islamic terrorism, from entering their
country.
23-month-old Alfie Evans had spent months at Alder Hey
Children’s Hospital in Liverpool suffering
from an unknown neurodegenerative disorder. As the cultural elites across the
globe obsessed
over the birth of Prince William and Dutchess Kate’s third child, the hospital
announced its plans to withdraw Evans’s life support against his parents’ wishes. Italy offered to give Evans
treatment and even gave him Italian citizenship. Pope Francis also offered to intervene. Liberals who normally support open borders
forbade a couple from travelling outside their borders in order to provide
their child with life-saving treatment.
Just as the English government has no problem sacrificing innocent lives
on the altar of diversity and multiculturalism, they don’t seem to have much of
a problem with sacrificing innocent lives in an effort to save the reputation
of the National Health Service. Keep in mind that the base of the Democratic Party wants to bring
socialized medicine to the United States. The story of Alfie Evans came to a
tragic end over the weekend, when he died just eleven days before his second
birthday.
The case of Alfie Evans bears many striking
similarities to the case of Charlie Gard, an 11-month old British boy who
suffered from mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome, a rare disorder which meant
that his mitochondria did not function properly. He required the assistance of a ventilator to
keep his cells functioning. The Great Ormond
Street Hospital
decided that it
wanted to withdraw his medical ventilation. His
parents strenuously objected to that decision and appealed to the European
Court of Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights, which
should have an interest in protecting the right to life, refused to hear their
appeal. Charlie’s parents raised
approximately $1.8 million to cover a trip to the United States where doctors offered
to treat him with an experimental drug.
No nation-state offered more help in the battle to save Charlie Gard’s
life than the Vatican . Pope Francis offered Gard Vatican
citizenship, so he could receive treatment at its hospital.
Eventually, the Vatican-owned
Bambino Gesu
Hospital , who also examined Evans,
sent a letter to the Great
Ormond Street
Hospital illustrating the
benefits of nucleoside treatments in patients and mice with a condition similar
but not identical condition to Charlie’s.
In light of that letter, the Great
Ormond Street
Hospital applied for a
new hearing. The Courts did not budge. Gard
ended up dying just a week before his first birthday. The phrase “he who does not know history is
likely to repeat it” surely applies to the cases of Charlie Gard and Alfie
Evans. Does anyone else not see the
connection between the left’s demonization of Christianity and their failure to
respect the dignity of human life?
All of these developments in our mother country should
give all Americans a newfound appreciation for the actions of the patriots who
risked everything during the American Revolution; as they sought to ensure that
their descendants would enjoy freedoms that they could have only dreamed of,
namely a First Amendment protecting the freedom of speech, which England
obviously does not have. Nearly a
quarter millennium after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many
threats to freedom still exist; in the form of radical Islamic terrorists who
seek to impose a worldwide caliphate and global bureaucrats who seek to abolish
the nation-state in favor of global government, effectively erasing the promise
of government by the people for the people as romanticized by President Lincoln
in the Gettysburg Address. As President
Reagan once said, “If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape
to. This is the last stand on
earth.” Should the left ever regain
power in America, it will not take long before the troubling developments
taking place overseas become commonplace in the land of the free and the home
of the brave as Ronald Reagan's worst fears come true.
