In light of Texas Congressman Will Hurd’s decision not to run for a fourth term, many publications have printed articles predicting an apocalypse for the GOP in the 2020 election. The Hill published an article called “Hurd Retirement Leaves GOP Gloomy on 2020.” Fox News published an article titled “Troubling Signs for House GOP as retirements mount ahead of 2020 elections.” So far, 14 members of the House of Representatives have announced that they will not run for re-election; 11 Republicans and three Democrats. Top 10 Most Likely Republican House Pickups

With the midterm elections less than two weeks away, all of the talking heads have spent most of their time obsessing about just how many seats the Democrats will pick up in the House of Representatives and how big of a “blue wave” will sweep across the United States of America.   While the Democrats definitely have more pickup opportunities in the House than Republicans, the Republicans have a few as well.   Picking up a handful or most of the ten seats listed below may insulate Republicans from the effect of a “blue wave.”   The website Five Thirty-Eight has classified all but two of the seats listed below as “highly competitive” based on its “ Atlas of Redistricting ” but the new map of Pennsylvania districts came out after the creation of the “Atlas of Redistricting,” therefore, the atlas does not contain an accurate description of the current districts.  The “Atlas of Redistricting” labels California ’s 24 th Congressional District as “usually Democratic” ...

New Year, New Life

Nearly two years ago, I wrote a  blog  titled “Advantages of Living in the Swamp,” explaining the reasoning behind my three-month long absence from this blog; namely, my life-changing internship with the National Journalism Center in Reston, Virginia.  I closed the blog by noting that “I remain optimistic about a possible return to the Swamp in the near future.” I can now report that my long-desired return to the Swamp has finally become a reality.  I have spent the past couple of weeks getting acclimated to my new surroundings as I wait to begin my new job, which will involve a lot of writing and policy research involving one of the most important political issues facing the country, next week. Living in the Swamp has presented me with a new set of challenges; after all, living independently means big changes for someone who has spent all but three months of his life living with his parents.
